Am, is and are

The verb be connects a subject with a name, description, place, age, or condition. In the present tense it has three forms: am, is, and are.

Use am only with I: I am ready. Use is with he, she, it, and one person or thing: She is at home. The book is new. Use are with you, we, they, and plural nouns: You are kind. The children are at school.

Agreement means that the verb form matches the subject. A singular subject usually takes is, while a plural subject takes are. You always takes are, even when it refers to one person.

In conversation, contractions are normal: I’m, he’s, she’s, it’s, you’re, we’re, and they’re. The full forms are useful when you want emphasis or a more formal tone.
