Subject–verb–object

The neutral order of an English statement is subject + verb + object. The subject performs the action, the verb expresses the action, and the object receives it: My mother cooks dinner.

English word order carries meaning, so the positions are less flexible than in Russian. The dog likes the children and The children like the dog describe different situations.

Some verbs do not need an object: The bus stops. Many common verbs do: read a book, drink water, watch TV, and open the window. Learn a verb together with the kind of object that normally follows it.

Time and place information usually comes after the object: I drink water every morning. They play football after school. You speak English well.

Start with a short subject, choose one clear verb, and then add the object. This dependable pattern is the foundation for longer English sentences.
